The Songs of Ascent

The Psalter was the songbook of ancient Israel.  But there is a songbook within the songbook, the Songs of Ascent.

This collection of psalms, Psalms 120-134, was sung by pilgrims as they traveled from all corners of ancient Israel to Jerusalem to worship at the temple on the great feast days.  Because Jerusalem is at a higher elevation that the rest of Israel this trip was referred to as "going up" to Jerusalem, and the psalms sung on the way became known as the Songs of Ascent.

These particular psalms were sung for a reason, repetition of the truths they contain prepared the pilgrim's hearts for worship. As New Testament worshipers the truth these psalms contain, about our great God, what He has done, and His love for His people will prepare our hearts for worship as well. To borrow the language of an ancient Irish hymn, they tune our hearts to sing His Grace.
